“This piece was created as a responce to a memory described by Coco, a Black Panther and resident of the neighbourhood. His childhood playground was a swamp created by sewage flowing from the western part of the city eastwards - simultaneously a dangerous and magical place - a contrast between tropical fruit and wild plants in a jungle like swamp and abandoned houses and real danger.
The combination of pastoral landscape and horror appealed to me. While working on the painting I heard additional descriptions from neighbours, repeating the sense of space composed of temptation and horror, sweet childhood memories mixed with fear and stretching the boundaries like the Garden of Eden and the risk of tasting the forbidden fruit and crossing over to the other side.”
